Chapter 1

The Paradox of Choice at Checkout

Unknown Speaker

Picture this: it's 11:30 PM on a Tuesday. A customer has just spent the last two hours with FOURTEEN browser tabs open, cross-referencing flight times, checking baggage allowances, and reading the fine print on a hotel cancellation policy. They are mentally exhausted. They finally make a decision, pull out their credit card, and hit "Checkout." And what happens? they are ambushed with a whole list of additional offers; . "Want to book a rental car? How about airport parking? Would you like to buy a souvenir t-shirt before you've even secured the flight?"

Unknown Speaker

this exact scenario kills MILLIONS of transactions and costs merchants billions in potential revenue. We call it "Ancillary Fatigue." By the time that customer reaches the checkout, their decision energy is completely depleted. They've made their commitment. And when faced with multiple, optional decisions right at the finish line... the merchant is not offering convenience. They are effectively assigning them HOMEWORK; the need to research and value all of the ancillary options offered.

Unknown Speaker

Ancillary fatigue usually shows up in three ways. First, irrelevance. Offering a parking deal when they haven't even booked the core ticket yet just feels like an interruption. Second is what we call "Decision Fog." This is when you offer three different tiers of the same add-on with tiny marginal differences at different price points. You're forcing them to stop, compare, and think. In e-commerce? Making a customer stop and think at checkout is the fastest way to an abandoned cart.

Unknown Speaker

But the real killer is the third one: Transactional Framing. Positioning an add-on purely as an extra cost. Because behind almost all checkout hesitation is one single emotion... anxiety. "What if I get sick? What if my plans change? What if I can't go?" , "what if the weather is bad?" In today's volatile world, seeing the word "non-refundable" doesn't feel neutral anymore. It feels like a massive financial risk.

Chapter 2

Building the Certainty Layer

Unknown Speaker

So, how do we fix this? How do we help our merchants stop bleeding conversions at the finish line? We have to change the way we think about add-ons and how we make our offers attractive to our merchants; both in terms of assisting them in maximising sales and generating meaningful new and additional revenues . The most effective digital brands right now aren't offering MORE options... they are offering a "Certainty Layer."

Unknown Speaker

Think about the difference between asking, "Do you want to pay more?" versus asking, "Would you like peace of mind?" A Certainty Layer conveys the second message and reduces risk. It protects the core purchase. It makes the checkout feel safer, not heavier.

Unknown Speaker

To build this, we use a very simple Three-Pillar Framework. Pillar number one: The EMPATHY AUDIT. The merchant needs to look at every single ancillary in their sales flow and checkout and ask, "What customer fear does this solve?" And be honest... who benefits more from this add-on? The customer, or the merchants KPI? If it doesn't solve anxiety or improve the experience, you are just adding friction. So cut it.

Unknown Speaker

Pillar two is the Binary Rule. Simplify choices into a clear "yes or no." Every additional conditional scenario added to the purchase decision increases cognitive load on the customer. A strong ancillary should be grasped and understood in literal seconds... low mental effort. = easy acceptance and purchase

Unknown Speaker

And pillar three — this is the one where C-suites get it wrong all the time — is deliver a Relational User Experience, NOT Transactional User Experience. The language used matters immensely. Let's compare two phrases. Option A: "Non-refundable ticket." Option B: "Your booking, protected."

Unknown Speaker

Which is stronger in framing a purchase decision?

Unknown Speaker

One sounds like a warning from a lawyer. The other sounds like support. You have to shift from cost language to care language. When you design ancillaries around certainty and trust, customer support tickets drop, because there are fewer "what if" disputes. And your revenue actually stabilizes, because security-based add-ons attach consistently. Risk is universal.

Chapter 3

Ancillaries in Action: Refundplus & Weatherplus

Unknown Speaker

Now lets look at two real-world Axcess examples of how this Certainty Layer works in practice, because whilst the theory sounds great, execution is everything. Let's look at Refundplus and Weatherplus.

Unknown Speaker

Refundplus. This is an embedded checkout solution that gives the customer extended refund protection. It sits directly within the booking flow — no redirecting them to some clunky third-party insurance site. It solves that exact commitment anxiety we talked about earlier: "What if I can't travel?" It covers illness, emergencies, disruptions.

Unknown Speaker

Why does this work? Because it follows the Binary Rule. It's a single decision — protect or don't. It's tied directly to the core booking risk, and there is zero extra admin burden for the merchant. It doesn't ask the customer to optimize their purchase; it just allows them to feel safe completing it.

Unknown Speaker

Now, Weatherplus is fascinating because it tackles a very specific psychological barrier for travellers, camping, experiences, events and other weather impacted activities, The customer is about to drop HUNDREDS of pounds, dollars, euros, and they think: "What if it pours with rain or a storm ruins the whole experience?"

Unknown Speaker

Weatherplus embeds a weather guarantee right at checkout. And here's the brilliant part — if adverse weather conditions are objectively met using independent weather data... the eligible customer gets an AUTOMATIC payment. No claims process. No forms. No arguing with a customer service rep. It just pays out.

Unknown Speaker

Both of these products share the exact same design principles. Relevance over range. Simplicity of decision. And they are deeply embedded, not just bolted onto the end of a transaction like an afterthought.

Unknown Speaker

At the end of the day, digital growth won't be won by the platform offering the most choices. It's going to be won by the platform offering the RIGHT choices, at the exact right moment. The aim is to help our merchants stop asking their customers for more money... and start offering them more confidence. Because when a customer feels like their investment is valued by by the seller just as much as it's valued by them, checkout stops being a hurdle. It becomes a moment of relief.

Unknown Speaker

Thanks for listening, everyone. Take a hard look at how our ancillaries can help you differentiate your sales conversations and add value to your merchants checkout flows - they are there to help you so please take the time to lean their values and -- use them.
